Three years ago, I set on a journey to my native land. Three years ago, I left for a sabbatical to find myself! I spent 1065 days in the wilderness of an old civilization that had a share of its glory “Phoenicia”, but it had become a country with no “identity”; a country that is imitating the rest of the world and had forgotten its roots. I met many people: • those who tried to take advantage of my genuine heart but I helped them anyway. • those who tried to impress me because I am an American hoping to get a citizenship but I gently told them to find a better way to improve in life. Today I want to talk about • those who loved me for who I am and I am so grateful for their true love and compassion. - My childhood friends. - My colleagues at work. - The students I helped clarify their own goals and desires in life. - The ordinary people I met who struggle to make ends meet (soldiers, bus drivers, grocery employees, the seamstress around the corner, the baker facing my apartment. etc…) I will carry them in my heart…this moment reminds me of Gibran Khalil Gibran’s words and I now understand how he must have felt when he said, “If in the twilight of memory we should meet once more, we shall speak again together and you shall sing to me a deeper song.” Indeed! I left a War torn country to find my peaceful freedom back to where I have arrived 26 years ago: Yes, I am back to “the land of the free and the home of the brave,” and in my hand a torch whose flame “glow world-wide welcome” and a prayer in my heart to keep all my loved ones in Lebanon from harm’s way. I am in love with this country and only few people understand what I really mean. God Bless America, my home sweet home! I have been longing to meet the MAN of my life. It’s never too late. I am waiting for my Cowboy who’s going to hold my hand and never let go of me…and tell me “everything is going to be okay!” I believe that real beauty lies within a person and there is nothing better than to be in company of a generous, kind, and loving man!
