I would think a first date to be a time of discovery. To learn about the person you have just met. You can't say to get to know a person because i think that takes a very long. You have to peel away the layers and examine each layer to really get to know a person. But the first date is a preliminary learning. To see if you fit. So the first date would be a place you could talk with no time constraints. Maybe have a nice meal, a few drinks, or a day at an event where you can just question and answer each other and interact.
